Up and down!

I had really planned to blog frequently in the first few hours of my recovery but yesterday was way to tough to to anything else than living and breathing. I got back to Jannis dads place and I felt pretty good, so I started to the super light "bend you knee" exercise I was told to do but I thought it felt a little tight and when I looked at the knee it looked way more swollen than it was in the morning. So I lifted the sock to check the bandage and the previously almost all white bandage now had a bit of blod under the waterproof film. So I was sitting there on the floor thinking that something was super wrong, totally freaked out and got super scared. So I called up the docs and they seemed to think it was no biggie at all as its very normal to swell up. But I jumped in a cab and went back to check it, I thought I was fully dying so I was super stressed, but when I got to see the nurse she just smiled and said that I had nothing to worry about, I then talked to the surgeon and even if there had been a small bleeding in the knee its no problem at all. They we're kind of joking with me and asking if I realized that they had cut me open and replaced a ligament, stuff like that is going to swell up and hurt a lot!

Either way by that time I guess the morphone was wearing off so I went from feeling like super man in the morning to being in pain and swollen in the afternoon. Think I texted Jens (who did the same surgery 5 months ago) about 100 times about how things felt etc, but at the end he just said, you are going to feel like everything s wrong, you are going to worry about everything, but its all good, its just a big surgery and its going to feel like super shit for the first few days!

I finally got some sleep at 2am and slept great until 9 with no pain at all, so that felt fantastic! Right now I am pretty swollen but the pain level is about a 3 on a scale to 10 so thats not bad at all!  The only shitty part is when you have to go to the bathroom, that was horrible to get up and go yesterday! Today I did however manage to get a shower and having a hot GF nurse made it almost pleasant to lay there on the floor like a 2 year old baby! haha

So I guess its all up and down after a surgery, I don't think the pain is the problem, but wondering is things are wrong and if your knee is going to explode is way worse! So having someone to talk to that has done the same thing is by far my biggest advice to anyone that is going to get their ACL done! Thanks Jens for putting up with all of my stupid little questions!

Agree the first can be pretty tough, the second time round gets a bit easier as you know what you are in for but your family start to worry. By the third your surgeon starts inventing excuses on your behalf to change sports and your parents buy you a set of golf clubs.

Best advice – Use it or lose it.

  • Didn’t get my ACL done, but ruptured an Achilles tendon in Feb ’12.
I didn’t want to write anything before because you still seemed euphoric from the meds and I didn’t want to spoil it for you. :)

Operations like these are a big shock to your body.

In my case I was fine when the morphine doses were still high for the first 48 hours, but the pain was excruciating once dosage was reduced.

Only one thing I will suggest to you: people will tell you to do this, do that, don’t do this, don’t do that.
Don’t listen to any of them.
–> Listen to your surgeon, and only to him!
He’s the one who saw the extent of the damage, and knows what was done to repair it.

I went nuts not being able to do super simple stuff, but you have to change your mind set for a bit. And go at your own pace.

Take it easy Jon, and good luck with your recovery!!!

hi jon! i operated the same when I was 15 years old after the swiss junior championship in downhill skiing. this was about 10 years ago. i did it in hirslanden clinic in zurich – the best! my cut is only about 4cm long and i remember that i didnt have much pain at all. but my muscles were gone so quickly which scared me the most. the only thing that hurted was when i had to learn to “bend” my knee again with this shitty machine (where you have to increase the % of angle). they started with it right after surgery. anyway… after 6 months rehab i was back on skies. during these years i never had any problems or pain. i really hope everything goes well for you too.

  • Anders

Keep it up Jon! Stay strong and you will be back in no-time!

  • Hey Jon, I’ve had this operation as well. First few days sucked a lot and I forced my knee to recover way to quick. Just watch a few movies or series the first week and then get to recovering slowly, thats my advice. Bet you get enough of advice but just thought I’d share my opinion with you. Good luck!

  • Jan

    Be patient!
There are a lot of ups and downs the following weeks!
Trust me, I’m “six weeks after”!!!
    It sucks as hell!
